Preventative Care

Braeside Dental Dr Goel and Patient

Dental cleanings or recare visits are about more than fresh breath and whiter teeth. Dental cleanings are an important part of whole body health.

A dental cleaning

  • Removes stain, plaque calculus (tartar) that can’t be removed with your toothbrush. Calculus is mineral hardened bacteria and food debris that can causes gum disease.
  • Helps prevent gum disease
  •  Helps detect cavities under the gum line at an early stage
  • Is an essential part of gum disease treatment
  • Removes stain, plaque and other surface debris to make teeth the feel smooth and bright
  • Oral cancer detection

Healthy gums are an important part of your body’s defense system.  When gums become inflamed or infected, they not only feel uncomfortable, they become leaky and can allow bacteria into the jaw bone and the bloodstream. This is called Periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease can cause

  •  Loose or mobile teeth
  • Bad smell or taste in the mouth
  • Dietary issues (loose teeth make it difficult/uncomfortable  to properly chew food, reducing nutrient absorption )
  • Tooth Loss
  • Jaw bone Loss

Periodontal disease has been linked to

  •  Cardiovascular Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Brain abscess (infections)

How Do I know if I need a cleaning?

Most adult benefit from a cleaning every 6-9 months. For adults with active periodontal disease, a cleaning every 3-4 months is recommended. This is because the bacteria hide in deep pockets around the roots of the teeth and cannot be adequately cleaned with a toothbrush, floss or toothpicks.

Some early warning signs of gum disease are red, swollen of bleeding gums,

a bad taste in your mouth, bad breath, a build-up of calculus on your teeth.

While the effect of e-cigarettes on gum health is still unknown, we do know that all tobacco use increases the risk of periodontal disease. Because gum disease is irreversible, catching the disease early in tobacco users is essential for long term dental health. The telltale sign of bleeding gums is absent in tobacco users and so the disease can progress unchecked without regular recare visits.

Cleanings for Children

Regular cleaning appointments are a great way for children to become comfortable at the dentist. They learn how to care for their teeth, receive instruction on brushing techniques, get used to the sights and sounds of a dental office in a fun and easy way, build a relationship of trust and strong communication with the dentist and the dental team. Our goal is to help your child to become their own best dental advocate.

Regular recare appointments are designed to be preventative in nature and they allow for early detection of decay and other diseases. Early detection means treatment is simpler, quicker, less invasive and costs less. We are here to answer any questions you might have about your smile and how to keep it healthy for life.
