Do I need my wisdom teeth removed?
The majority of people have wisdom teeth, but unfortunately, most people don’t have enough
room for them to function in a healthy manner.

Here are some good reasons for removing them:
❏ Your mouth isn’t big enough.
❏ Impacted teeth can cause problems later on in life like cysts. It is really not fun to have
wisdom teeth removed when you are 40+ years old.
❏ Damage to the teeth in front of the wisdom teeth
❏ Infections- if you get infections around them, that is not healthy and can cause bone
loss. In addition, the infection in those areas can be potentially life-threatening.
❏ Inflamed gum- (pericoronitis) making chewing very painful
❏ Cavities of the wisdom tooth or tooth directly in front
❏ The roots of the wisdom teeth are 1/2 to 3/4 developed. This is the ideal time to have
them removed as they are easiest to remove at this stage. Typically the age for this
approximately 16 for females and 18 for males. Removing the wisdom teeth at
approximately these ages helps reduce the risk of complications and youthful healing
means that the recovery will be relatively quick.

Why would dentists recommend leaving wisdom teeth in?
❏ There is enough room and they have come in straight
❏ You are older than 30 and the wisdom teeth are deeply impacted with no communication
with your mouth. In this case, we would recommend regular panoramic x-rays to make
sure there is no cysts or other problems developing around them.

Is it painful to have wisdom teeth removed?
To manage the pain of this minor surgical procedure, these are your options:
❏ Local anesthetic (numbing or freezing like you may have had for fillings)

❏ IV sedation – this provides relaxation and drowsiness and has a level of amnesia (not
remembering the procedure). We can provide this for you at Braeside Dental Centre.
❏ General anesthetic – you would be fully asleep like major surgery. This is only
available at an Oral Surgeon’s office.

What can I expect afterward?
❏ Swelling is normal for 2-3 days. To help minimize this ensure you place ice on the
outside of your cheeks as much as you can for the first 24 hours.
❏ Bruising. Some bruising is normal afterward. For the average person, it is usually
minimal.
❏ Pain: the worst discomfort is when the numbing or freezing comes out. You will be given
instructions for pain control and want to make sure you have taken the pain medicine
before the freezing comes out. It is usually painful for 3-5 days, getting better over time.
You can expect a full recovery within a couple of weeks.
❏ Dry socket: this is the most common problem after wisdom teeth removal. This is a
result of the blood clot dissolving. We will give you instructions on how to help avoid it,
but it can still happen even if you have done everything right. It usually shows up after
3-5 days. The pain from dry socket is not well controlled with pain medication, however,
it is easy for us to help you with this problem. We can place medicine in the area of
the extraction site that very quickly helps with the pain. It will take a little longer to heal,
but there are no other long term problems if you get a dry socket.
❏ Stitches may be used if the gums need to be cut to remove the wisdom teeth. They are
typically the dissolvable kind and only need to be in place for a couple of days.

How much does it cost?
Like most things in life, it depends.
❏ Impacted wisdom teeth are more difficult to remove and cost more.
❏ Sedation will also increase the cost.
Like you, we don’t like surprises, so we will give you an estimate for the extractions and
sedation at the consultation appointment. We will also review the possible problems that may
occur with you at this time. Please ask us as many questions as you have… we love questions!
